Winthrop Professor Xiao Zhi Hu is UWA's Advanced Materials Team Leader within the School of Mechanical and chemical Engineering.

Hi research looks at understanding common issues of structural failures related to corrosion, fatigue and fracture and the relevant methods used to prevent structural failures.

Current projects include practical applications of techniques commonly adopted for structural integrity analysis and damage tolerance analysis based on fracture mechanics; basic failure modes and critical loads of cracked structures.

In 2013,  Xiao was one of three UWA researchers who jointly developed a new super-strong ceramic that  may prolong the life of expensive mining equipment which could reduce the cost for  replacement.
