Professor Ken Mercer was appointed to the Australian Centre for Geomechanics in 2012, as an expert in environmental and mining geomechanics

He has more than 26 years of experience in the civil engineering and mining industries as a geotechnical engineer, researcher and consultant and is recognised as a leading geotechnical practitioner in many areas, including surface mining and open pit rock mechanics, tailings dams, waste dumps, water dams and risk evaluation. In addition, his expertise extends to  soil mechanics and rock engineering in the fields of paste and thickened tailings.

Ken gained experience  over a wide range of commodities but particularly platinum, heavy mineral sands and iron ore and he has provided geotechnical engineering advice on projects throughout Australia, Africa, South America, Europe and Asia.
